Crash of C-47 42-100863 - 99th Troop Carrier Squadron - 17 September 1944

On the first day of operation Market Garden the 50th Troop Carrier Wing was involved in dropping paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division in the Groesbeek area. The 441st Troop Carrier Group suffered most of the German anti-aircraft gunners and five of their planes failed to return. One of those was 42-100863.

The plane crashed near the small village Groot-Linden. This was after dropping all but one of the paratroopers. The plane had already made the turn after the dropzone.

All four crew members and the one paratrooper perished in the crash.

The four crew members are buried at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis.
