Left: A C-47 of the 71st Troop Carrier Squadron take off from Aldermaston airfield, England. Their target location is near Veghel.
Right: 90th Troop Carrier Squadron C-47 named “Aurora Dora” forms the background of this scene where paratroopers walk down the flight line towards the planes that would carry them to Holland. “Aurora Dora” is one of the planes in Serial A-20.
The flights was not an easy one. Here is one of the C-47 tow planes of the 437th Troop Carrier Group that was shot down on 17 September 1944. The low, slow flying planes crossed the front lines north of Gheel where German anti-aircraft gunners had a field day.
B-24 bombers drop supplies on 18 September. All Troop Carrier planes were already involved in the glider mission of the 18th. The mission on 17 September was the only paratroop mission followed by glider missions and resupply missions. The fields of LZ-W are littered with gliders that had just landed.
The charts clearly shows the effect of the weather on the Troop Carrier missions. On 19 September, Serial A-82 was called back while they were over the Channell. None of the gliders reached the continent on that day. Serial A-81 tried to puch thru. A part of the serial returned to England. Gliders landed everywhere. The North Seas, Belgium, Holland, on the LZ, just a few miles out of the LZ.
For those that returned to England, they had to wait until the 23rd before the weather would let them go to Holland.
